MacPro3,1: Restart instead of shutdown

Hi!

I've recently updated to Mac OSX 10.11.6 from 10.10.

Since the update, the MacPro 3,1 does not shutdown when asked, but restarts immediately.

I click on "Shutdown", the screens turn black and a small loading-circle appears, then the screens turn off.

During that, the power indicator on the MacPro stays on. It then just goes off for a brief second, then goes on again.

The Mac then boots up again as usual without any input from my side.

Holding the power button for a couple of seconds turns the computer off.

I already looked for some solutions online:

- deleted com.apple.Boot.plist (after some struggle because system files cannot be deleted all of a sudden) but it didn't change anything. Also delted the Power Management plist

- I noticed some Finder-crashes after the update, so I also deleted plist-Files connected to the Finder

- Turned off "wake on LAN" in the options menu

- I took out the optical drive because I saw some Console-Log errors connected to "IOATA" device, some users suggested the drive could be faulty

- the MacPro I'm using does not have the stock graphics card but a ATI Radeon HD 7950. I suspect the problem could be related to ATI cards.

- I unplugged all cables (except power of course), switchted off the bluetooth mouse and tried shutting down, but the computer still boots again immediately

- NVRAM and SMC reset did not change anything

Any suggestions? 🙂 Thanks!

MacPro

Thank you for the fast reply.

- Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Done, did not fix it.

- Try starting in Safe Mode

Problem still persists when shut down in safe mode.

- Boot to Recovery and repair the startup disk

No error there.

format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX

Yep, I guess that's what needs to happen next.

Anything usefull from the Console-log? If not, I'll go ahead with the reinstall.

Thank you for your time and effort!

Just as an update, if anyone finds this thread in the future:

I've delayed the formatting up until today where the computer did not boot at all. It hung up on the grey background and then just rebooted.

I've then formatted the disc and reinstalled MacOSX 10.11 but with no success: The shutdown / immediate restart-problem on MacPro 3,1 persisted. Also, I noticed one of three connected displays not waking up after display sleep. The display came back when I removed and plugged in the Display Port cable again.

So, I formatted again and went back to OSX 10.10 and the shutdown issue is gone. I can now shutdown the computer without a problem.

I still suspect the ATI Radeon HD 7950 card as a possible reason. But anyway, this Mac is now 8 years old, might be time to phase it out at some point - and unfortunately get a Windows machine for work, since Apple neglects the MacPro user base.
